Globally, health issues arise in many different ways and are influenced by multi factors, such as economic factors, political factors, psychological status and society factors. The greatest threats to global health in 2018 are the rapid growth of non-communicable diseases, pandemic preparedness and global health security, including the threat of antimicrobial resistance. Several major diseases currently affecting countries globally include HIV/AIDS, malaria, Zika, and tuberculosis. Rapid identification and control of emerging infectious diseases helps to promote health, prevent the international spread of disease and protect the health of population. Other possible solutions include creating medical opportunities for those in need and finding ways for families to sustain themselves with enough food and water.
Public health can be part of the solution to this challenge. Evidence shows that public health interventions are more cost-effective than or equivalent to health care interventions. In spite of this, there are several barriers to invest in public health, such as the belief that prevention care may cost more than treatment, the longer timelines required for public health interventions, the influence of certain groups of people, and the reality that preventive treatment are not covered by health insurance.
The possible way to solve these issues are developing health policies and laws, optimizing global health finance and a political commitment to make health a priority. To address the global health issues and barriers related to public health roles, communication between researchers, decision makers, health professionals, students and lecturers are needed. Therefore, the committee held “The 3rd International Symposium Of Public Health (3rd ISOPH)” under the theme “Challenging Public Health Roles Towards Global Health Issues” in JW Marriott Hotel, Surabaya, Jawa Timur, 31st October – 1st November 2018.
